The term ‘science’ derives from the Latin scientia, meaning ‘knowledge’. In traditional civilisations, this term corresponded to vidyā (विद्या) in Sanskrit, from the root vid- (‘to know’, cognate with Greek οἶδα and English ‘wit’), and to gnōsis (γνῶσις) in Greek, from the root γνω- (‘to know’, cognate with Sanskrit jñā- and English ‘know’). The Latin scientia itself is a nominal formation from scīre (‘to know’), whose past participle scītus suggests discrimination or discernment. In the exoteric orders of Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam, vidyā, gnōsis, and scientia are distinguished from mere opinion (doxa), from ignorance (avidyā), and from the discursive reasoning (tarka, dialektikē, kalām) that operates within the lower levels of the mind. The opposing term is pauruṣeya (पौरुषेय), ‘human-made’ or ‘dependent on human authors’, which characterises the secular sciences of the modern period. In the Perennialist understanding, traditional science is not a historical category but a permanent metaphysical possibility. It is the application of the Intellect (buddhi, nous) to the hierarchical order of reality, producing knowledge that is simultaneously cosmological, anthropological, and soteriological. Traditional science does not ‘discover’ new facts but rather ‘recollects’ the eternal order of archetypes (logoi, śabda, asmāʾ) as reflected in the sensible world. Unlike modern science, which proceeds by hypothesis, experimentation, and inductive reasoning from the gross material level (Level 5), traditional science proceeds by intellectual intuition, analogy, and symbolic correspondence, beginning from the Supreme Principle (Level 1) and descending through the levels of manifestation. Its methods are qualitative, synthetic, and inherently hierarchical, recognising that lower levels are but reflections of higher levels and that true causality flows from the top down.

Traditional science does not originate at any single level but rather constitutes a vertical knowledge that integrates Levels 2, 3, 4, and 5 under the illuminating principle of Level 1. Its apex is the non-dual knowledge of the Supreme Principle, which is not a ‘science’ in the sense of objective knowledge but the very identity of the knower with the known. The Intellect (buddhi, nous) that operates as the instrument of traditional science belongs properly to Level 3, but it receives its illumination directly from Level 2 (Ātmā) and, through that, from Level 1. The lower levels (4 and 5) provide the objects of investigation only insofar as they symbolise and manifest the higher orders. Most modern thinkers, lacking any access to Level 3 intellection, mistake the empirical methods of Level 5 for the totality of science, an error that closes off any possibility of traditional science.

In the Perennialist tradition

René Guénon makes the distinction between traditional and modern science a central theme of his critique of modernity. In La Crise du monde moderne, he argues that the secular sciences are ‘fragments’ of traditional sciences whose principles have been lost, leaving only an accumulation of quantitative measurements without qualitative meaning. Guénon identifies the fundamental error of modern science as the confusion between ‘knowledge’ and ‘knowing’ – the reduction of scientia to a collection of propositions about matter. In Le Règne de la Quantité et les Signes des Temps, he shows that modern science is entirely contained within Level 5, mistaking its quantitative measurements for reality itself, whereas traditional science always subordinates quantity to quality and number to its metaphysical archetype. Guénon’s own works on symbolism (e.g., La Grande Triade, Symboles de la Science Sacrée) are practical demonstrations of traditional science, interpreting natural and geometric forms as symbols of higher states of being.

Frithjof Schuon develops the concept of traditional science in relation to the permanent functions of the Intellect. For Schuon, traditional science is not a body of data but a ‘discernment’ between the Real and the unreal, followed by a ‘concentration’ on the Real. In Logic and Transcendence, Schuon insists that traditional science is ‘sacred’ not because its objects are religious but because its method participates in the nature of the Principle. He distinguishes between two modalities: the cosmological, which applies intellectual intuition to the hierarchy of levels (as in the Hindu bhūmikās or the neoplatonic hypostases), and the soteriological, which uses this cosmology to effect the return of the individual to the Principle. Schuon repeatedly warns against the historicist error of believing that traditional science is a thing of the past, recoverable only through archaeological memorisation; it is a permanent possibility for those possessing initiatic qualification.

Ananda Coomaraswamy, in The Transformation of Nature in Art, demonstrates traditional science in action by showing how medieval Christian and Hindu art are not ‘expressions’ of personal feeling but applications of cosmological principles. Titus Burckhardt, in Sacred Art in East and West, applies traditional science to the study of architecture, iconography, and music, revealing how traditional civilisations embedded metaphysical truths in sensible forms. Martin Lings, in The Eleventh Hour, contrasts the traditional scientific understanding of the cosmos as a hierarchy of states with the modern materialist understanding, showing that only the former can account for meaning, value, and spiritual realisation.

Applications for the seeker

The seeker who wishes to approach traditional science must first abandon the modern assumption that science is a democratic enterprise accessible to all by virtue of method alone. One practical discipline is the study of traditional cosmology through symbolic forms: the deciphering of geometric patterns in sacred art, the memorisation of numerical correspondences (e.g., the four elements, the three worlds, the seven heavens), and the interiorisation of these patterns through meditation. The seeker should learn to read the natural world not as a collection of objects causally interacting but as a hierarchy of symbols reflecting the divine Names. A second discipline is the cultivation of intellectual intuition through the purification of the mind from the discursive, analytical habits fostered by modern education. This requires sustained interior silence and the suspension of the demand for ‘proof’ in the modern sense. The seeker should be warned against mistaking the accumulation of facts about traditional doctrines for traditional science itself; memorising the names of the archangels or the categories of neoplatonic emanation is not equivalent to intellection. Not every seeker will attain direct intellection of the archetypes in this lifetime, for such intellection requires not only discipline but initiatic transmission and a karmic predisposition that is extremely rare. The modern world, which denies the very possibility of vertical knowledge, actively obstructs the conditions under which traditional science could be practised, so even qualified seekers must contend with an environment of systematic ignorance.
