René Guénon begins this chapter by distinguishing between two radically different kinds of knowledge: sacred (or traditional) science and profane (or modern) science. He argues that true science is never separate from metaphysical principles. In all traditional civilisations, knowledge forms an organic whole where the sacred encompasses and directs the profane. The modern world has broken this unity by declaring independence from any higher principle.
The origin of profane science is traced to the Renaissance, when Western intellectuals began to reject the intellectual authority of tradition. They replaced contemplation of eternal truths with the investigation of the sensible world. This shift was not a progress but a reduction: knowledge was limited to what can be measured, calculated, and verified by the senses. This limitation, he insists, is arbitrary. There is no legitimate reason to confine knowledge to the material order except the prior decision to deny anything beyond it.
Modern science, therefore, is not false in every detail, but it is radically incomplete. It accumulates facts about the phenomenal world while remaining ignorant of causes, essences, and principles. He compares it to a man who studies the shadow cast by a lamp while ignoring the lamp itself. The more modern science specialises, the further it distances itself from true understanding. Each discipline becomes an isolated fragment, incapable of seeing how things connect on a higher level.
A central error of modern science is its claim to be the only valid form of knowledge. He calls this intellectual imperialism. By denying the existence of sacred science, modern science implicitly denies the reality of anything that cannot be empirically verified. This leads to a vicious circle: the method determines what can be known, and what cannot be known by that method is declared non-existent. Traditional science proceeds in the opposite direction: it begins with principles and then descends to applications, whereas modern science begins with phenomena and never rises to principles.
The consequences of this inversion are grave. A civilisation founded solely on profane science lacks any spiritual orientation. It can produce technical power but no wisdom. It can manipulate matter but cannot understand the human soul. The much-celebrated achievements of modern science—electricity, engines, industrial production—are real on their own level, but that level is the lowest degree of reality. To mistake this for the highest is a form of idolatry.
He then examines the relation between science and the individual. Modern science is inherently individualistic because it begins from the separate ego, the thinking subject, and treats universal truth as an aggregation of subjective perspectives. Traditional science, by contrast, is impersonal and universal. It does not originate in the individual but is received from a chain of transmission going back to a primordial revelation. The individual in traditional civilisation is a vessel, not a source.
The chapter also discusses the role of intuition. True knowledge requires intellectual intuition—a direct, non-discursive grasp of principles. Modern rationalism rejects intuition as unscientific because it cannot be demonstrated by logical reasoning. But logic itself depends on principles that cannot be proven logically. To deny intuition is to saw off the branch on which reason sits.
Finally, he summarises the opposition: sacred science is knowledge of the absolute, obtained through participation in the divine intellect; profane science is knowledge of the relative, obtained through sense perception and discursive reasoning. The former liberates; the latter imprisons the mind in the material world. Modern man, having abandoned sacred science, does not know that he is ignorant. He mistakes his ignorance for knowledge and his limitations for freedom. The crisis of the modern world is ultimately a crisis of knowledge. Until the West recovers the idea of sacred science, no political or social reform can save it from its own disorder.
